Tennessee runs a statewide electrical permit program through the State Fire Marshal's Office. Brentwood uses it. Brentwood's own codes office handles building permits, while electrical permits and inspections come from the State of Tennessee.
Some cities run their own electrical programs instead. The state keeps a list of those places. Near Brentwood, it names the City of Franklin, the City of Spring Hill, and Metro Nashville and Davidson County. Inside those lines, the local office issues the electrical permit and sends its own inspector.
State rule 0780-02-01-.17 says no local government may adopt electrical standards less strict than the state's. So the core safety rules carry over, but the office, the forms, the license rules, and even the code edition can differ.
How Do Williamson County, Metro Nashville, and the State Differ?
In Williamson County, the answer depends on the city. Nolensville homes use the state program, as Brentwood homes do. Franklin runs its own electrical inspections inside city limits. Spring Hill, which crosses into Maury County, began its own electrical inspections in December 2023.
In Davidson County, Metro Nashville Codes handles electrical permits. That includes the small cities of Forest Hills and Oak Hill, which run their own building permits but send electrical work to Metro. Metro also requires its own electrical registration and has adopted a newer edition of the National Electrical Code than the state's 2017 edition.
For your project, this means one thing: ask your electrician which office will issue the permit before work starts. Installs are performed by independent electricians licensed in Tennessee, and the good ones know each office's process. Larger jobs, like commercial and workplace charging, can bring in other offices too.
How Do You Find Your Permit Authority?
Look at your property tax bill, not your mailing address. A ZIP code can cross city lines, so two houses with the same ZIP can fall under different permit offices. The tax bill shows whether the property sits inside city limits and which county taxes it.
Then match it to the office. Inside Franklin or Spring Hill city limits, the city handles electrical permits. Inside Davidson County, Metro Nashville does. In Brentwood, Nolensville, and other places on the state program, the state does. The permits and inspections guide explains each step.
How Do You Find Your Electric Utility?
Check your power bill. The name at the top tells you who serves your address. Brentwood is split between Nashville Electric Service and Middle Tennessee Electric. NES serves all of Davidson County. Middle Tennessee Electric serves Franklin and many other Williamson County communities. Spring Hill has three possible providers.
Your utility decides which incentives you can use. Only Middle Tennessee Electric members can apply for the $50 EV Ready credit. The rebates and incentives page covers the rest, and the FAQ answers common utility questions.
